Article: Youthful days when my bike was my best friend ; Regular Bygones correspondent Stan Tacey sadly died on Christmas Eve. But he had already sent us the following article describing a 160-mile round trip he made by bicycle to his uncle's farm in Hertfordshire, at the age of 14, in the 1930s. As ever, his detailed recollections from more than 70 years ago are amazing - and he would never forgive us if we did not publish them.

Regular Bygones correspondent Stan Tacey sadly died on Christmas
Eve. But he had already sent us the following article describing a
160-mile round trip he made by bicycle to his uncle's farm in
Hertfordshire, at the age of 14, in the 1930s. As ever, his detailed
recollections from more than 70 years ago are amazing - and he would
never forgive us if we did not publish them.
I Had my first bicycle when I was very small. I remember my
brother teaching me to ride round the country lanes of Littleover
with pieces of wood screwed on to the pedals so that I could reach
them.
Today, my best friend is a walking stick but, in those far-off
days, it was a bicycle and, for the next few years, I cycled ...
