Royal Mail bosses today revealed their hit list of 29 Highland
post offices that face the axe under a controversial closure
programme.
The branches were named amid relief that the number facing
closure was not as high as had been feared.
Across the UK, as many as 2,500 of the 14,000 branches are to be
shut and a proportional share in the Highlands would have been 40
branches.
Eleven of the 29 branches named today will be replaced by an
alternative service such as a temporary office for a few hours a
week, possibly in a village hall or shop, or a mobile service.
There will also be four new "service points" in the most remote
parts of the north that are not served at present.
