An Eight-year-old boy died after falling into a secluded chalk pit while out with his family.

It is understood the boy, from Barnetby, who has not yet been named, had been playing when he fell and banged his head.

Police said it appeared the child, who they believed had been with his mother, brother and grandmother, had fallen into a pit, which is about 25ft deep and has a rocky base. It is not known how far the boy fell.

The pit is in a secluded wooded area down a road off the A1074, Somerby, close to the route of the Viking Way.

A police spokesman said: "It seems the boy was playing in a pile of old chalk near a chalk bank. It appears he has fallen and banged his head.
