Article: De La Cruz controls the goal

UNION CITY -- Juan De La Cruz always knew he was supposed to be playing boys soccer at the varsity level.

But when he began as a freshman at James Logan High -- he wasn't quite ready.

"When I was in middle school, I watched my brother (Francisco De La Cruz) play varsity for three years," Juan De La Cruz said. "I got to watch the speed, and I had an idea of what was needed to play on the varsity team. But I wasn't ready, I guess, when I was a freshman."

De La Cruz was ready by the end of his freshman year when he was called up to the varsity team. Once the goalkeeper got there, he was there to stay.
