Americans are grabbing for chopsticks and gobbling up sushi like
never before -- for dinner, lunch and snacks, embracing it as a
fashionable and healthy brain food.
But while sushi is packed with protein and essential omega-3
fatty acids, some types are also tainted with methyl mercury, a
dangerous neurotoxin that causes brain damage in babies and other
problems for adults who ingest too much.
In fact, one of the most popular items on a sushi menu -- tuna --
is among the highest in mercury content. Its levels not only exceed
those of other types of fish commonly served in Japanese
restaurants, but levels typically found in canned tuna.
