Washington -- Now that Iowa and New Hampshire have judged the
candidates, we can judge Iowa and New Hampshire.
How did these two states, accused of being too small and too
white to serve as proxies for the nation every four years, perform
their exalted duty?
Perhaps the most important thing they did, for other states and
for their own future as kingmakers, was to decide so little. They
delivered mixed outcomes, giving the rest of the country the gift of
a longer campaign.
Had Iowa and New Hampshire voted in concert and sent one
candidate in each party on his or her unstoppable way to the
conventions, the resentment of their influence would be sky-high,
fueling cries for a total overhaul of ...
