MIAMI -- OK, question. Did the Cubs run into a random buzz-
saw Sunday, or did they run headlong into the ghost of 1984?
The team that needed a simple close-out win to move into its first
World Series in nearly six decades got dissected 4-0 by a Florida
Marlins team that only Saturday seemed to be gasping, gaff in neck,
half-dead on the dock.
Twenty-three-year-old Marlins pitcher Josh Beckett buzzed Sammy
Sosa's head, sawed off the Cubs' bats and basically looked like the
kid who was tabbed the No. 1 high school prospect in the country in
1999 by Baseball America.
"Best game I saw him pitch all year," Marlins manager Jack McKeon
said.
