Genentech Inc.'s profits rose 6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007, but that wasn't enough to excite shareholders.

Instead, analysts and investors have their eye on this coming year for the South San Francisco-based biotechnology company -- as an important regulatory decision and data on several important clinical trials are slated to be released.

"They've not had major readouts (results) for three years, so this is going to be a very important year for Genentech because important news is expected to come," said Shiv Kapoor, analyst with Ferris, Baker, Watts.
