On-board navigational systems eliminate the need for paper maps, provide instant vehicle location and can determine routes with a minimum of information. And they're getting better and better.

The systems, which utilize Global Positioning System satellites, first appeared on passenger cars in the mid-'90s. Acura was the first manufacturer to bring the technology to the United States: a navigational system for the California market on the 1996 model-year RL.
