After eight years of disappointment and three teasing phone
calls, Colorado Springs native Rich "Goose" Gossage is headed to the
Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Wasson High School graduate who intimidated hitters with a
menacing mustache and an overpowering fastball in 22 major league
seasons was named on 85.8 percent of the ballots Tuesday by 10-year
members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Gossage, 56, received 466 of 543 votes on his ninth ballot, 78
more than last year when his name appeared on 71.2 percent of the
ballots, to become the first Coloradan in the Hall. He will be
inducted July 27 in Cooperstown, N.Y.
