For the sake of his family, Trey Hillman decided last summer he
was done managing baseball in Japan. A baseball lifer, the 45-year-
old Hillman cherished his time leading the Hokkaido Nippon Ham
Fighters, but he wanted his son, T.J., 14, and daughter, Brianna,
11, to experience their teen-age years in America. That's why he
told the Ham Fighters in August he wasn't exercising his option for
the 2008 season.
Then again, he missed the smells of American baseball, too.
"We played mostly indoor games" in Japan, "so you miss being
outside," the first-year Kansas City Royals manager said yesterday.
