Article: 'Tech elite' a minority, but often forge path: study

If you can't stay away from your e-mail, have an insatiable appetite for bandwidth, use a personal digital assistant, own a digital videodisc player and rely on a cell phone, you're part of a "technology elite" that is blazing a trail for the rest of the U.S. population.

A study based on a national survey and to be released today by the Pew Internet and American Life Project concludes, "Although these ardent technophiles are a minority of the population, their trend- setting ways often ripple widely in society."

Adds chief researcher John B. Horrigan, "Many people, in time, wind up following the technological trail cleared by these pioneers."
