The first thing you notice as you walk into Jekka McVicar's herb farm is the rich smells. They envelope you with a patchwork of perfumes - sage, rosemary, basil, lavender and a thousand others all woven into the stitching.

Legions of potted herbs stand to attention in neat rows as Jekka walks along the line, minutely examining the plants, like the Queen trooping the colour.
