Joseph C. Cooke, 80, the longtime publisher and editor of the
Washington Sun weekly newspaper, died Jan. 17 of blood cancer at his
home in Washington.
Mr. Cooke, who was widely known by his initials, J.C., bought the
Sun in 1968 and published it as an uplifting voice for the city's
African American community for the next 40 years.
Rejecting cigarette and liquor advertising, Mr. Cooke sought to
put a positive light on local and national developments affecting
his readers. The Sun carries the slogan "a newspaper dedicated to
equal rights and justice" and, under Mr. Cooke's leadership, has
focused largely on local news, education, scholarship notices,
politics and community empowerment.
