Dutch central bank chief says government too optimistic about economy

BRUSSELS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Dutch central bank President NoutWellink said the government is too optimistic about economic prospects, warning that the U.S. subprime credit squeeze will takeits toll across the Atlantic, Dutch media reported on Monday.

Wellink projected that the Dutch economy will grow by 1.5 to 2.5 percent this year. "But I think l.5 percent is more likely than 2.5 percent," he told the television program Buitenhof on Sunday.

At the end of last year, the central bank forecast growth of 2.6 percent for the year 2008.
