Article: Citizens hear more about Mallonee

HOPEWELL -- Citizens had the chance to pitch questions to one of the builders hoping to renovate the former James E. Mallonee Junior High School into luxury apartments.

Lewis Stephenson, owner of Abateco Services Inc., spoke about the project to a crowd of about 20 last week at the Appomattox Regional Library. The audience was composed of members of Hopewell Citizens for Good Government.

Stephenson, who was a student at Mallonee, said the project's approval by City Council two weeks ago was a great step forward.

"We've overcome some of the hurdles," he said. Aside from 35 to 40 apartments, the building will include a day care center and a public auditorium, Stephenson said.
