FEWER people in Scotland and England than ever before say that they are British, according to the findings of a new social attitudes report.

The survey has found that 13-per cent of those born and living in England and just 3-per cent of Scots describe themselves as "only" or "mainly" British. The declining sense of Britishness is particularly acute in England, where there has been a steep rise in national identity.

The findings, which are contained in a British Social Attitudes Report to be published on Wednesday, look like a blow to the attempts of the prime minister, Gordon Brown, to put Britishness at the top of the political agenda.
