Like his most recent novel, Stephen King's literary career can be
divided in two: before The Stand - which was published in 1985 - and
after. It would be far too glib to say that everything up to and
including that book, his most successful work, was somehow superior
to those novels that followed. There have been some notably fine
works - Misery, some of 'The Dark Tower' novels, the recent Cell
and On Writing, King's wonderful treatise on the craft of the
author.
But a succession of duds: The Dark Tower itself (the concluding
chapter in the eponymous series), Lisey's Story, ...
