House prices continued to fall this month as potential buyers
stayed away from the market until the outlook becomes clearer,
figures out today show.
The average cost in England and Wales fell for the fourth
successive month, by 0.3 per cent to Pounds 174,700, although in the
North prices remained static, property website Hometrack said.
The annual rate of growth also continued to fall, easing to 2.3
per cent in January, down from 3.6 per cent in December and the
lowest level since June 2006.
At the same time the number of new buyers registering with estate
agents continued to fall, dropping by 11.5 per cent during the
month, following falls of 7.9 per cent in December and 9.1 per cent
