Article: City works toward goal of reducing plastic bags

YUCAIPA - City officials are considering ways to work with retailers to reduce the use of plastic bags in the city.

Councilman Bob Lampi proposed forging a partnership between big- box retailers and grocery stores to create an education program that would push for recycling plastic bags.

To that end, the five-person City Council agreed Monday to consider creating a law modeled after a proposed Los Angeles ordinance that would get rid of plastic bags voluntarily.

Los Angeles' proposal requires retailers to work with customers to eliminate plastic bags. If retailers fail to reduce the amount they use, the city could consider banning the bags.
