Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is an early contender for the next big thing in physics: a 20-mile particle speedway where matter and anti-matter would collide and, scientists hope, reveal secrets of the universe.

The Linear Collider is an international project that would cost $4 billion to $10 billion. If approved, construction near the far west suburban lab would begin between 2007 and 2010 and take about six years.

Depending on what design is used, the accelerator would require between 150 megawatts and 225 megawatts of electricity -- roughly enough to supply between 50,000 and 80,000 homes.
