Article: Sir Norman's last picture show ; Rosenthal steps down from the Royal Academy after 31 years

SIR NORMAN ROSENTHAL, the flamboyant head of exhibitions at the Royal Academy, is to step down from his post.

He is to become a special adviser to the institution where he has organised blockbuster shows for 31 years, the Evening Standard can reveal. The move will give him free rein to work with international museums and galleries as a freelance curator.

But he will remain closely involved in creating new exhibitions at the 239- year-old Piccadilly institution.

Staff will be told today and the search for a replacement starts next month.

After so long at the heart of one of London's best-known and most influential art institutions, Sir Norman could prove difficult to replace.
