Save-A-Lot is a long way from stocking the Hill District with its
400 discount brands of coffee, cereal and produce.
Executives of the St. Louis-based grocer munched on sweet rolls
and apple strudel Tuesday in Station Square's Grand Concourse during
a sales pitch designed to gauge if Hill District residents will
embrace the chain that has 1,180 stores nationwide and six in the
Pittsburgh area.
Dick Koop, director of development, said the average Save-A-Lot
customer in Pittsburgh has a median income of $35,000 or less and
probably lives on a fixed income or receives welfare. Save-A-Lot is
a subsidiary of Supervalu Inc., a company with about $44 billion in
annual sales.
