Supermarkets are struggling to keep up with the demand for free- range chickens as consumers turn their back on intensively-reared birds.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's 'Chicken Run' and Jamie Oliver's 'Fowl Dinners' were screened three weeks ago.

Both programmes aimed to raise awareness of the conditions endured by so-called 'standard' birds that allow some supermarket chains to sell battery-farmed chickens for as little as pounds2.
