Supermarkets are struggling to keep up with the demand for free-
range chickens as consumers turn their back on intensively-reared
birds.
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's 'Chicken Run' and Jamie Oliver's
'Fowl Dinners' were screened three weeks ago.
Both programmes aimed to raise awareness of the conditions
endured by so-called 'standard' birds that allow some supermarket
chains to sell battery-farmed chickens for as little as pounds2.
Yesterday afternoon the Echo visited six city supermarkets.
At Asda, in Newark Road, all free range legs and drumsticks were
sold out and only two whole free range chickens were left.
