Events at Punchestown yesterday, coupled with the unveiling of
the weights for the Grand National tomorrow, were a reminder that
there is life after Cheltenham. And there may well have been two
stepping stones towards the 800,000 Aintree showpiece at the Co
Kildare track, the eponymously traditional one over three and a half
miles and another over two miles.
The weather in Ireland yesterday was truly unpleasant; incessant
rain during the morning had turned to snow for the running of the
opening novices' hurdle and the cross-country banks course was
enlivened by extra hazards in the form of areas of standing water.
The jockeys' colours owed more to Pollock than Mondrian, but there
