The state Senate has acted. A key Assembly committee has, too. Now it's up to the full Assembly to approve a measure in the next few weeks that will return the power to appoint the secretary of the Department of Natural Resources to the citizen-member Natural Resources Board.

That's the way it was before 1995, and that's the way it should be again in order to provide the secretary with some insulation from the partisan politics that can affect decisions better left to science and good public policy.
