Man's enduring fascination with dolphins traces a line way back
into antiquity when the first fishermen encountered this prince of
the seas.
In 62AD, the Greek moralist Plutarch wrote: "To the dolphin
alone, beyond all other, nature has granted what the best
philosophers seek: friendship for no advantage."
Through the ages, these fellow-fishermen belonging to the
cetacean family have held our attention for their grace,
intelligence and human-like intuition. It is as if our fascination
with them is matched by their own curiosity about us.
However, despite our interest, we know surprisingly little about
how they behave or even how many of them live off our coast.
