'A copy of the book is going for $75 on eBay," says Jayson Blair,
reading from his BlackBerry pager as he sits down at our table at
Smith & Wollensky. "Signed."
The disgraced former New York Times reporter shakes his head and
laughs a little in disbelief: This is what it is to be a celebrity,
even one of the more-infamous-than-famous sort. "Some crazy person,"
he says, speculating on who would be bidding on it. "It's true,
though, you can find people to buy anything. I know someone who sold
a $57 piece of yarn on eBay."
"Can you see who it is?" I ask.
"I can't tell," he says, checking the device's small screen.
