A TEAM of Scottish doctors has created artificial arteries that
will help thousands of patients suffering from a major life-
threatening condition.
The artificial implants can be used for bypass surgery for
patients with clogged arteries, a condition that affects 10,000
Scots every year. Professor Peter Stonebridge, a vascular surgeon at
Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, led the development of the artificial
arteries after discovering that blood flows in a spiral, rather than
in a straight line as previously assumed.
He used this discovery to create artery grafts that allow blood
to continue to flow in a spiral in a bid to improve the poor current
success rate of artery bypass operations.
