BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A woman whose body was found in a
southern Illinois cornfield 22 years ago has been identified as a 28-
year-old drifter from California, authorities said Monday.
St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said the woman - long known
as "The Summerfield Woman," after the small town where a farmer
found her nude body in September 1986 - was Pholia Mylia Chavez.
"Finally, finally we can put a name to her and I can sleep better
at night," said Stone, who wondered for years about the identity of
the woman, who had been strangled and her pelvic area mutilated.
Chavez, of Costa Rican descent, had been buried in Belleville's
Mount Hope Cemetery under a headstone inscribed: "Jane ...
