STANDING in the rain outside the Twickenham Citizens Advice
Bureau, I'm trying to look "street". There are a couple of Polish
immigrants, an old man with no teeth and a lady in a headscarf who
is staring at an invitation to a Tatler party at the Ritz sticking
out of my pocket. Blimey, I think. Should I make a joke about the
things you find in Oxfam coats? The long bus ride to this CAB
started in Holland Villas Road, W14, where I was born to a life full
of opportunity and privilege. I was always a bit of a dreamer,
though; I never felt as if I was playing with a full deck in the
real world. School was a boarding establishment for girls in Russell
and Bromley shoes.
