The Army is falling further behind in its effort to recruit soldiers who have at least a high school diploma, according to a report released Tuesday.

About 71 percent of the Army's 67,398 recruits last year had at least a high school education, the National Priorities Project think tank said in a study examining the traits of new military personnel. That's down from 83.5 percent who had at least a high school diploma in 2005.

The Department of Defense has a goal of 90 percent of recruits having at least a high school diploma, citing research that shows most of those recruits finish their first enlistment.
