OPEN COLUMN ; Real economic stimulus is investing in new jobs

Editor, the Tribune: Shouldn't stimulus suggest a quick reaction to provide a positive long-term effect? Writing a check and hoping people will spend might provide a quick boost in consumerism, but it does nothing to assist our long-term economic health.

Extending unemployment benefits is more effective than quick cash, but real stimulus would come as a result of bricks-and-mortar spending. For years, we have neglected the infrastructure in this country. The results are dangerous bridges, crumbling highways and deteriorating inner cities, schools and public health facilities.
