Many heavy industries in West Virginia are ripe for projects that recycle waste heat to generate electricity, like the project announced for West Virginia Alloys Inc., experts say.

Gov. Joe Manchin on Tuesday joined with Arden Sims, president of West Virginia Alloys, and Thomas Casten, chairman of Recycled Energy Development, to announce a $45 million to $55 million energy- recycling project at the Alloy Plant in Fayette County.

The Alloy Plant heats quartz sand, which is 45 percent silicon, in electric arc furnaces to produce 99.9 percent pure silica. The plant can produce up to 75,000 metric tons of silica a year. The silica is used in thousands of products, from silicone sealants to ...
