Southern Maryland election officials praised the debut Tuesday of
a controversial electronic touch-screen voting system, despite
computer glitches that sidelined machines in several counties across
the state during the presidential primary.
Election officials in Charles and St. Mary's counties reported few
problems with new computerized voting machines, which were used in
Southern Maryland for the first time Tuesday.
Three of the 321 machines in Charles County were scrapped when
election judges had trouble starting them when polling places opened,
said Dorothy C. Duffield, county election director.
