WEST Virginia enjoys the cheapest electricity in the land.
Residents in the state pay, on average, a little more than 6 cents
per kilowatt hour.
This helps attract industry, particularly those industries that
use a lot of electricity. The Century Aluminum plant in Ravenswood
is Appalachian Power's largest industrial customer.
Thomas Casten, chairman of Recycled Energy Development, said the
state and the nation can do even better. He calculated that only
12.5 percent of the energy we use is turned into a useful product.
Incandescent light bulbs, for example, are only 6 percent
efficient. This is why Congress has mandated a switch to compact
fluorescent lamps in the next four years.
