TUESDAY'S West Virginia Republican convention in Charleston was a stroke of genius.

It did exactly what its organizers hoped it would do.

For several hours on CNN, West Virginia was mentioned frequently. That probably means that one or two people, at least, now know that yes, there is a West Virginia.

A few years ago a national survey was taken by Charles Ryan and Associates, if my memory serves me, concerning the national reputation of West Virginia.

The surveyors found that, by and large, people had no opinion about West Virginia, good or bad. In fact, they found a significant number of people didn't know there was a West Virginia.
