Want to keep a journal? Here are eight tips for sticking to it.

1. Start your journal when you want to keep a record of a sustained period: an exciting trip, a pregnancy, a child's first year. This will get you off to a good start and make writing a habit.

2. Choose an ink pen you like and a durable journal. I use a Pilot Razor Point with black ink and write in Moleskin lined notebooks. When new, the pens allow for a fine, small script. The notebooks have thin pages but good paper and a portable design.

3. Pick a regular time to write, but for special occasions make more time.
