World demand for Zimbabwean tobacco up: official

HARARE, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe Tobacco Association president Andrew Ferreira has said demand for the crop is strongerthan what it was 10 years ago, local media New Ziana reported on Saturday.

There is a huge demand for Zimbabwean tobacco to manufacture cigarettes, he said, adding Zimbabwe had the resources to increasethe production of the golden leaf.

Zimbabwe, he said, could take markets from Brazil and the United States whose farmers were shifting crops producing bio-fuels. The climate in Zimbabwe was suited to producing tobacco in Africa ahead of Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda and Tanzania.
