When a Tribune report compared the base salary of Columbia Public Schools Superintendent Phyllis Chase to that of Springfield schools Superintendent Norm Ridder, local administrators cried foul.

Ridder's published salary of $157,566 - as first reported by the Springfield News-Leader - included one month of car allowances and a month's worth of health benefits but did not include a $45,000 tax- sheltered annuity that boosts his total compensation package.
