Democrats have 796 of them, and if the race for the White House remains as close as it is now between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, these "super delegates" - elected officials and party members who can back any candidate - could decide the next nominee.

So while they may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, analysts note that super delegates count for 20percent of the vote at the Democratic National Convention - making their powers substantial.
