Ten minutes before the first of only two dress rehearsals for
Yakima Valley Community College's production of "The Vagina
Monologues," I read my monologue for the first time in front of the
mirror.
I'd been practicing my inflection and rhythm in my living room --
in between commercials -- and I felt pretty confident. But then,
watching myself do it in the mirror, I wasn't so sure.
I didn't like the way my face scrunched, how my hair looked, or
the red splotches on my neck I get when I'm nervous.
Then, on stage, in front of a handful of students who were
probably assigned to come to the rehearsal so we'd have an audience,
I stood up and said my first line. My second. The third.
