Although the Rev. Billy Graham is an icon of faith for many Americans, very few of the top mainstream scholars of Christianity or prophetic Christianity have written about him.

"Even though no other Protestant minister of the 20th century has had greater cultural effect across the globe, we in the mainstream have been a bit snobbish toward Billy Graham as a throwback to revivalism in days gone by ... and that his theology is shallow and not worthy of critical engagement," said Michael G. Long, associate professor of religious studies and peace and conflict studies at Elizabethtown College.
