LONG BEACH - Tucker Elementary in Los Altos will merge with
MacArthur Elementary in Lakewood next school year in an effort to
save money and improve efficiency during a time of declining
enrollment, Long Beach Unified School District officials said
Friday.
This fall, Tucker's nearly 400 students will join about 430
students at MacArthur, which is a 3.8-mile drive away.
The LBUSD expects to save about $1 million by using Tucker this
fall as space for offices and programs now located in leased
facilities, said district spokesman Chris Eftychiou.
The merger is made possible by the decline in district enrollment
over the last few years, mostly at the elementary level, he said.
