Civilian staff are to set to join crime teams in Humberside Police for the first time.

Until now, crime investigation work in the force has been exclusively carried out by police officers and temporary agency staff who are normally former officers.

However, a major staffing shake-up in crime teams across the force will start next week.

Officials say most of the new civilian staff will perform so- called "back office" administrative roles in crime investigation work currently carried out by full-time police officers.

They also believe the move will generate substantial savings by ending the expense of hiring temporary investigators through agencies.
