Article: Teen substance abuse tied to sleep problems as toddlers

Children who had difficulty sleeping as toddlers are more likely
to use drugs, alcohol or tobacco as teens, researchers report in a
new study.
A University of Michigan Health System team followed 257 boys and
their parents for 10 years. It found that children with poor sleep
habits as preschoolers were more than twice as likely to have
substance-abuse problems in adolescence. The research, published
Thursday, was part of a long-term study on family health.
The finding held true even when other factors, such as depression,
aggression, attention problems and parental alcoholism, were taken
into account. Similar data on girls has not yet been completed. The
