Jordan's king, Portuguese president discuss Mideast peace

AMMAN, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's King Abdullah II and visiting Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva on Sunday discussed the situation in the Middle East and peace making efforts in the region.

The two leaders "agreed on the necessity to step up efforts tailored to reach a just settlement to the Palestinian issue that eventually leads to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel," said a royal statement.

They also "asserted their commitment to work for reaching a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Arab Israeli conflict onthe basis of terms of reference of the Madrid conference, ...
