Article: Monona Terrace's struggles prompt hotel talks in Madison

A large new hotel might be headed into the heart of downtown Madison.

Exactly how necessary it is remains open to debate.

The city is discussing with Milwaukee-based Marcus Corp. a plan to build a hotel near Monona Terrace to serve as accompaniment to the Capitol Hilton, which the Marcus Corp. also built.

Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's spokesman George Twigg said the discussions are in their earliest phases, and while the mayor would like to see something develop in the next couple of years, no details are in place.

"They're looking at the surface parking space behind the Madison Municipal Building," Twigg said. "It's basically an idea to add more capacity to the downtown area."
