Article: Russell establishes Pirates' philosophy

BRADENTON, Fla. - It was exactly the type of statement Adam LaRoche has been waiting to hear.

Before the first full-squad workout of spring training on Wednesday, Pirates manager John Russell delivered his version of the state-of-the-franchise address.

During the one-hour, closed-door meeting, Russell never begged for a .500 season, something the Pirates have not accomplished since 1992. Instead, the first-year manager told the players they'll be held accountable every day for doing even the little things the right way.

It echoed what LaRoche preached a year ago, when he checked in for his first spring with the Pirates after being traded from the Atlanta Braves.
