The Hamden football team had every reason to celebrate after earning a surprising 19-14 victory over favored Cheshire in the season opener for both teams last Friday.

The victory was considered an upset on paper as Cheshire returned several skill players from last year's team that went 6-4 and shared the Southern Connecticut Conference Division I East title with West Haven.

But Hamden was also in this position last year. As the underdog, the Green Dragons knocked off the Rams in the first game. But then Hamden struggled and didn't win again the rest of the season.
